Day 44 – Denver Zoo

Megan’s Take

Today we went to Mass at 7 am, which was the earliest that we’ve ever gotten the kids out for church. It was hard to get up early, but it was the only time that made sense with travels. After Mass, we grabbed our camper and headed to the Denver Zoo. It seemed huge! Definitely bigger than the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and the Indianapolis Zoo. Emilia and Emmett were really excited about seeing the animals, especially the flamingos.

They were also on the search for elephants,

giraffes,

lions,

and monkeys/apes.

Emmett thought the spider monkey swinging around and jumping was hilarious,

and they enjoyed feeding a llama.

We were impressed with how close we felt to some of the animals in their enclosures. Overall, we spent about 5 hours at the zoo, which used up all our time and energy before dinnertime.

Phil’s Take

I believe that the Denver Zoo is the best zoo we’ve been to. It was large and there were a lot of animals to keep the kids interested.

We went clockwise through the zoo and started with the lions. We saw the most males I have ever seen in one pen. There were 4 of them, brothers from the same litter.

Megan happened to catch one cleaning himself just like a house cat. Imagine that hairball though…

After the flamingos we went to their Tropical Discovery building, which houses all sorts of reptiles, amphibians, and fish. We spent the better part of an hour in there. They have a cool coral aquarium that has all sorts of cool fish in it.

Emmett and Emilia were excited to see the clown fish from Finding Nemo.

After we caught a shot of the kids in a cage

we went to see the tigers. We were just about to leave when one of them came out. It was cool until the tiger peed in the water, proceed to lay down in said water, and then started drinking it. Yuck!

We got to see a hippo playing with a ball. You usually only see them lounging around, so it was nice to see one active.

It chased that ball all the way around that pool a few times while we were standing there.

The first rhino we saw was how the hippos usually are, submerged and barely moving.

One of the wallabies had a little one in her pouch, which was something I’d never seen before.

I loved the spider monkey, which was probably my favorite animal at the zoo, simply because of the non-stop entertainment. It was wound up and so was Emmett, as you could see in the video in Megan’s section.

I’ve covered the animals I thought were interesting. All of the pictures from today are in the following gallery.
