Megan’s Take
Happy Father’s Day! It’s always weird to celebrate holidays on the road because we’re out of routine. In any case, today turned out to be a low-key day. We were supposed to stay in Moab until tomorrow (Monday) morning, but we ended up changing our plans. After 2 days in Arches and 2 days in Canyonlands, we felt like we were ready to move on. We went to Mass at St. Pius X church in Moab and then drove to James M. Robb State Park in Fruita CO. I was initially feeling bummed about leaving behind our swimming pool in Moab, because it’s so hot here. But the campground is so peaceful and private that I’m glad we gave it a chance.
We went to the Dinosaur Journey museum near our campground, which was very interesting. It was full of bones, fossils, tracks, casts etc. It was a small but well-done museum with some interactive features, but you’ll get more out of it if your children aren’t 2- and 4-years old. I spent most of the time chasing around my kids who were particularly wound up.

After that, we went to the visitor center at the Colorado National Monument, but we’re saving the scenic drive and hikes for a (cool) morning.

So the big activity of the evening was going to Sam’s Club to stock up. We got dinner/snacks from the cafe there and can hardly believe that it’s so cheap. (We got 2 drinks, 2 hot dogs, a large slice of pizza, and a soft pretzel for about $6.) The kids were excited about eating there since we’ve never done that, but they were *most* excited about the reusable water balloons we bought. It was such a good impulse buy. Since we don’t have a pool at our campground, I decided it would be a fun way to cool off, and yes, it was definitely fun! The kids giggled so much about throwing water balloons. Even Emmett, who does not like to get wet, joined in.

We also briefly visited our campground playground. It’s been about a week since we’ve been at a campground with a playground, and the kids wanted to check it out. I warned them that it may be burning hot. Emilia told me it only “burned a little bit” and she showed me with her hands how much it burned. I think she only did the slide once. But they had fun playing for a bit until we headed back to the campsite for water balloons.
Phil’s Take
There isn’t m much to add to what Megan has already said. I’m looking forward to the sights tomorrow!
