Ptarmigan Tunnel and Iceberg Lake Trail

Today we logged another 16+ miles with probably 2,500 feet elevation gain hiking in Glacier National Park. We went up to the Many Glacier region where we started with the Ptarmigan Tunnel trail. It was basically uphill through forest and meadows to a lake.

From there, the trail turned *more* steeply uphill with switchbacks across the slope behind the lake, leading up to Ptarmigan Tunnel, which goes from one side of the mountain to the other (easy access). Here is the tunnel entrance and view from the side facing Ptarmigan Lake:

Needless to say, we were not disappointed with the views offered by this trail – or any of the trails we’ve hiked thus far in Glacier National Park. After taking pictures, we hiked back down and then up again (elevation gain = good workout) on the Iceberg Lake Trail which is in the same area. We experienced more subalpine meadows and possibly the most beautiful glacier-fed lake we’ve now seen.
