Avalanche Lake & Fish Lake

We packed up at the St. Mary/East Glacier KOA and traveled along the southern border of Glacier National Park through Marias Pass to West Glacier KOA for our last night near the park. We said goodbye to Glacier National Park by taking two final hikes – Avalanche Lake and Fish Lake. Avalanche Lake was beautiful all the way through, culminating in a picturesque glacier-fed lake, and we would do this trail again, especially doable with a family.

Fish Lake was very secluded and allowed us to view an ecosystem that was different from what we’ve previously seen in the park. The area was warmer and wetter, and naturally, there were more insects, dragonflies, etc. Unfortunately, a good portion of the trail passed through forest that has been ravaged by wildfires, and the forest is slowly recovering and coming back to life. On the way back down, we were surprised to see two baby deer on/near the trail making high-pitched bleats as we passed, which I’m assuming may have been a call to their mother.

By the way, everything in this region is *huckleberry* related. Yes, there are many huckleberry bushes, which the bears reportedly love to visit. But to feed the tourists, there is huckleberry ice cream, huckleberry pie, huckleberry taffy, huckleberry tea, etc. For dinner on our last night here, I had huckleberry lager with huckleberry pulled pork – both good.

Did you take a camera, or using a cell phone?
Be safe. I wish I could be hiking with you.?

    1. Phil’s cell phone for panorama photos, and the camera for everything else ?
