Day 17 – Snow Canyon State Park

Megan’s Take

We slept in until 7:30 am today, which we really needed. I could tell a difference in the kids, because they were very peppy on our morning hike at Snow Canyon State Park. We saw lava tubes,

petrified dunes,

cool rocks,

and a small slot canyon.

We did a combination of trails (Petrified Dunes – Hidden Pinyon – Whiptail, Jenny’s Canyon, Lava Flow), and it was one of my favorite hiking experiences of the trip – beautiful views, tons of variety within short mileage distances, fun terrain to walk on. I would definitely come back here.

The afternoon highlights were cookies from a gas station (Dutchman’s Market – actually really good, homemade, and somewhat of a local not-so-secret secret), Handel’s ice cream again, and a drive through part of the nearby Paiute reservation land (awesome views).

It was a rainy afternoon so the kids had playtime in the camper until it cleared enough to go to the campground playground.

Phil’s Take

I absolutely agree that Snow Canyon State Park is one of the most beautiful places we’ve seen this trip. It’s crazy how this is “just” a state park, when it has more beauty than all of the state parks in Indiana combined. I guess when you’re comparing it to places like Zion National Park, it maybe doesn’t reach that level, but that’s just a ridiculous comparison. I got some great panoramas from that park.

I also think I have figured out how that rock we saw on the east side of the tunnel in Zion National Park was formed. See the petrified dunes on the left and the rock from Zion on the right. There’s definitely some similarity in how they have rock going every which way. It’s obviously a different kind of sediment, but it looks like it got layered in a similar manner. This is where I would love a geologist’s explanation or to even understand it myself.

We didn’t take as many pictures today, but I promise they are good, except for the bug guts.
