Theodore Roosevelt National Park – South Unit

Theodore Roosevelt National Park South Unit – Painted Canyon

Today we left Downstream Campground and headed to Theodore Roosevelt National Park South Unit. (It’s quickly becoming more difficult to keep track of the day, since we’re out of our usual work schedules and daily routine. Phil and I often ask each other, “What day is it again?” I’m a creature of habit and live by my agenda planner and to-do lists, so I think vacation is actually an opportunity for personal growth. [Ashley, my soul sister, back me up here.] Therefore, I should vacation more often in order to live up to my full potential. I have not yet convinced Phil of this but will keep trying.)

The South Unit was beautiful. Unfortunately, we only had one afternoon to spend here, and it rained most of the time that we would have spent hiking. But on the bright side, we had about 50+ miles of scenic drive to enjoy, winding through the park. We were amazed at how much wildlife there was – wild horses, bison, and prairie dogs, in particular.

How many prairie dogs can you spot? The prairie dog towns are extensive.

We saw beautiful scenery here and at the Cottonwood Campground within the park. We did very little hiking because of the rain and thunderstorms that were rolling through, but we agreed that we would definitely come back to spend more time here.
